Vice President, Facilities & Support Services

Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) is a nationally recognized academic, public healthcare system that provides high-quality care to the residents of Cambridge, Somerville, Everett, and other communities in Boston’s Metro-North region. One of the ten largest healthcare systems in Massachusetts, CHA operates under one hospital license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It includes the Cambridge, Somerville, and Everett Hospitals; 13 primary care sites; the Cambridge Public Health Department; and a statewide Medicaid managed care program.

Its services include adult medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, surgery, and behavioral health services, along with a wide range of specialty services. In FY 2021, CHA recorded 9,853 discharges.

CHA was created in 1996 when Cambridge and Somerville Hospitals merged as a state-approved Independent Public Authority. The system later acquired Whidden Hospital in Everett, MA. Cambridge Health Alliance is the largest safety net provider of psychiatric services in Massachusetts. Of its 350 licensed and staffed beds, 140 are psychiatric beds. In addition to its inpatient services, CHA has an extensive ambulatory program with an annual volume of 770,000 visits, 140,000 of which are psychiatric outpatient visits. Over 660 physicians comprise the active medical staff, which includes 544 physicians employed by the Cambridge Health Alliance Physicians Organization as well as independent practitioners. The total workforce numbers nearly 5,000.

Critical clinical services include primary care, behavioral health, emergency care, surgery and specialty care, hospital care, maternity care, and state-of-the-art testing services. These are offered at convenient neighborhood locations. CHA patients have seamless access to advanced care for rare or complex conditions at its clinical partners – Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Mass. General Hospital for Children (MGHfC).

CHA’s work extends far beyond patient care. It has a robust Department of Community Health Improvement and operates the nationally accredited Cambridge Public Health Department. In addition, it collaborates closely with local governments and non-profits to improve health and reduce barriers to care in the communities they serve.

CHA hospitals are teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and Tufts University School of Medicine: CHA trains the health care providers of tomorrow. CHA is an academic health system with outstanding physician-teachers and strong training and research programs.

Position Description

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President of Facilities and Support Services is responsible for directing the operations and financial performance of the Departments of Plant/Facility Operations; Design and Construction; Real Estate and Property Management; Security; Parking; Transportation; Food Service; and Environmental Services, at all CHA locations.

The Vice President works with the executive management team concerning strategic and space planning and capital committees and will Chair or serve on multiple committees, including Joint Commission Steering, Environmental Safety, Space, and Emergency Preparedness.

The Vice President oversees budget, productivity, and quality management; assures compliance with regulatory codes as required for licensure and accreditation; and collaborates with site leadership in ensuring a safe and compliant environment of care. The Vice President of Facilities and Support Services has primary organizational responsibility for compliance with and monitoring of The Joint Commission Environment of Care regulations.

The Vice President of Facilities and Support Services is responsible for over 300 FTEs, operating budgets, and the annual infrastructure capital budget. Several major construction projects are ongoing or planned, and the Vice President of Facilities and Support Services will play a key role in the successful planning and completion of those projects.


Cambridge Health Alliance seeks a visible, collaborative, and communicative leader. The incumbent will build upon an established team-based, collegial environment that presently exists in the Support Services departments. Relationships matter at Cambridge Health Alliance.

The Vice President will commit to patient safety, customer satisfaction, efficient and effective use of resources, innovation, and performance improvement. The incumbent will be a strong support services professional with a track record of successful, positive, and dynamic leadership in a challenging and complex organization. Creativity, resourcefulness, and flexibility is required, as is the ability to lead effectively in stressful situations.

An Engineering Degree is strongly preferred, though degrees in Construction Management, Business, or similar may be considered. A Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline is preferred. A minimum of 10 to 15 years experience in a healthcare setting, with at least 8 years experience in Facilities/Support Services management operations, is required. Knowledge and experience in a behavioral health setting is strongly preferred.

Experience with performance improvement and continuous quality improvement is required. Knowledge of life safety and other pertinent codes and regulations, including DPH, EPA, and OSHA, and experience in overseeing emergency preparedness and compliance with TJC Environment of Care chapters, is required. Experience in negotiating with government (state and local) regulatory and planning agencies is needed, as are strong finance and budgeting skills.
