Vice President, Real Estate, Design, and Construction

Position Description

The Vice President, Real Estate, Design, and Construction, will provide operational and strategic leadership, direction, and coordination for UHealth’s planning, design, and construction activities. The Vice President Real Estate, Design, and Construction reports to the Vice President of Ambulatory.

UHealth is in the early stages of a multi-year, billion-dollar facilities expansion. The Vice President, Real Estate, Design, and Construction will provide leadership, oversight, and direction to the construction programs for the major expansion projects at Sole Mia and Doral. These projects include research, education, and mainly ambulatory care components. The Vice President will oversee and coordinate planning, design, and construction for all structures, additions, modifications, and improvements to buildings and spaces related to these projects.  

The Vice-President role is a new position at UHealth. The incumbent will be responsible for functional areas, including: Master Planning; Facilities Planning, Design, and Construction; Project Management; Space Planning and Management.  The Vice President will work closely with the existing Planning, Design, and Construction staff to deliver projects under the Facilities Operations & Planning Project Delivery Playbook and University of Miami Standards of Operations.

The Vice-President will be responsible for project close-out and acceptance, and will oversee a department of approximately ten (10) employees, and expanding. They are a multi-disciplinary team of project coordinators, project managers, senior project managers, real estate professionals, facilities planners, and administrative staff. The staff is augmented by outside contractors, as needed.

UHealth seeks an innovative, collaborative leader who speaks confidently and possesses a customer service-based approach. They must communicate transparently and be open and available to senior leadership. Expert in the leadership competencies of communication, feedback, delegation, and change management, the individual must be a self-starter who can relate confidently to senior leadership, department heads, and board members.


A BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or Architecture, is required. An MS in Engineering, a Master of Architecture, or an MBA in a relevant field, is preferred. Significant progressive experience in similar healthcare roles is required.

A minimum of ten (10) years progressive experience in the design and management of complex healthcare or institutional research organizations, with new construction or renovation project experience required. Expertise in academic medical center or large hospital construction management, development, planning, and design, is needed.  

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with and between architects, project managers, department heads, administrators, consultants, contractors, and co-workers. The incumbent must be an excellent communicator with strong competencies and experience in executive management, including leading and motivating professional teams, strategic planning, and achieving budget objectives.  

The ideal applicant will bring a demonstrated history of the effective leadership of diverse teams with a proven track record delivering projects with excellent outcomes. The candidate should possess the competencies to solve complex problems related to real estate and design & construction in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Analytical and multitasking skills are required, as are highly evolved persuasion skills.
