Director, Facilities Management

Children’s Wisconsin works to ensure that every child and family they serve receives nothing but the best care. New construction will further enhance their ability to offer the best and most-advanced pediatric care, including a six-story, 237,000-square-foot addition, which will offer specialty clinics and Surgical Services. The addition is currently under construction.

The Hospital is a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center and a Level 1 Children’s Trauma Center.  From 60 kids served in their first year, 1894, Children’s Hospital now has 2 million annual touch points. Children’s Hospital numbers more than 394,000 specialty care visits, 277,000 primary care visits, and 20,000 surgeries yearly. Children’s Wisconsin partners with schools and neighborhoods throughout Wisconsin via robust community support programs. 

Position Description

Reporting to the Vice-President, Campus and Support Services, the Director, Facilities Management directs the activities of Facilities Operations and Environmental Services system-wide for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The Director will provide Environment of Care leadership and will also serve as the Environmental Safety Officer. The Director will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements of The Joint Commission, CMS, NFPA, and federal, state, and local AHJs. The Director will engage in facilities design and construction projects as requested, and work closely with the leaders of Facility Planning and Development, Clinical Engineering, Risk, Legal, and Infection Control.

The Director will be responsible for facility repairs and maintenance, and for providing a clean, safe, functional, and appealing environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The Director will Chair the Environment of Care Committee (EOC), ensuring that management plans and safety policies are updated and maintained, and safety rounds conducted and documented. The Director is accountable for 1.6 Million square feet on campus, 296 licensed beds, 3 direct reports, and 30 indirect reports. This position will also provide leadership and accountability for EOC compliance at offsite locations, including a second hospital located in Neenah, Wisconsin.

The ideal candidate will set departmental goals and direction, articulate that direction, and manage staff to achieve those goals. The Direct will provide frequent communication, consistent process, and employee accountability, communicating transparently while providing staff mentorship and education opportunities. The individual must be a self-starter who can assist in creating a vision for facility operations that is sustainable and supportive of Children’s Wisconsin. To this and all tasks, the Incumbent must bring a collaborative approach, sharing in the organization’s vision as a world-class organization focused on providing exceptional pediatric care and patient experience. Technical facilities management knowledge is required, as is leadership and communication skill. The select candidate will embrace the vision, mission, and values of Children’s Wisconsin.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline closely related to Engineering, Facility Management, Business Management, or Hospital Administration, and a demonstrated knowledge of operational and compliance principles in a healthcare environment. A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in all aspects of facilities and/or environmental services operations is required, as is 5 years of progressive healthcare supervisory experience.  

The ideal applicant will have the ability to prepare and administer budgets and evaluate methods of service delivery, assessing the effectiveness of existing practices and recommending, when appropriate, new techniques and procedures for the delivery of services.     

A demonstrated history of the effective management of diverse teams and the ability to think strategically to solve complex problems related to facilities management and environmental services is required. The applicant must possess a leadership style that builds credibility and achieves positive outcomes, advocating for the needs of the Department. The Director must lead by example, communicating with and mentoring staff while maintaining high department standards. Soft skill expertise is needed, as is the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
