Position Description

Reporting to the Vice-President of Hospital Services, the Director, Facilities Management has direct responsibility for the leadership of the Facilities Management Department (60 employees) and the Environmental Services Department (220 employees) at the UVM Medical Center (2,284,000 sq. ft.) and Fanny Allen (120,000 sq. ft.) Campuses. The incumbent will ensure that the facilities department provides the best possible physical environment for patients, physicians, and staff by organizing, planning, directing, evaluating, and improving inpatient facilities and environmental services. The incumbent will lead services that maintain building systems and infrastructure, biomedical engineering, cleaning services, and waste management.  

The Director is responsible for ensuring that operations are completed in accordance with regulatory requirements. The Director will manage compliance activities related to The Joint Commission’s Equipment Management, Life Safety, and Utilities Management programs. The incumbent will lead a significant portion of the organization’s Sustainability Program, including energy reduction and waste management

The Director must be willing and able to support professional growth in department staff through active coaching, identifying growth/development opportunities, and issuing performance-based feedback. The UVM Medical Center seeks an innovative and collaborative leader with a strong customer service approach. They must communicate transparently and be open and available to facilities and hospital staff, with the ability to manage in a matrix organization. Expert in the soft skill competencies of communication, feedback, delegation, and change management, the individual must be a self-starter who can relate to senior leadership, hospital staff, and patients. Technical facilities management knowledge is required, as is leadership and communication skill.


The successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline closely related to Engineering, Facility Management, or Business Management, and a demonstrated knowledge of operational and compliance principles in a healthcare environment.  A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in all aspects of facilities and/or environmental services operations is required, as is 5 years of healthcare supervisory experience. Practical experience leading a sustainability program is required, as is large scale hospital/multi-site experience, and the ability to work in a matrixed organization. 

A Master’s Degree is highly desirable, and a current Certified Healthcare Facilities Manager (CHFM) designation is preferred, or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months from the start date of employment. Certifications with the International Executive Housekeepers Association and the American Society for Healthcare Environmental Services are desirable.  

The ideal applicant will bring a demonstrated history of the effective management of diverse teams and the ability to think strategically to solve complex problems related to facilities management and environmental services. They must possess a leadership style that builds credibility and achieves positive outcomes, advocating for the needs of the Department when required. The Director must lead by example, communicating with and mentoring staff, while maintaining high department standards. Soft skill expertise is needed, as is the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
